New Instructor Programme
No teaching experience required. We take you through DVSA's official qualification process step by step, then bring you straight into The Driver Academy franchise with pupils ready to go.
Before You Start
You must be at least 21 to be registered as an ADI (you can start training earlier).
You'll need to have held a full GB or NI driving licence for a qualifying period, we confirm your exact eligibility at your first meeting.
A new enhanced DBS check is required regardless of any previous checks you hold. As a Scotland-based instructor, you'll also need to join the PVG Scheme through Disclosure Scotland, a requirement for all ADIs and trainees since April 2025.
DVSA assesses character and conduct as part of your application, we'll talk you through this honestly upfront.
The Pathway
This is the official route to becoming a registered Approved Driving Instructor. We support and coach you through every stage.
We confirm you meet DVSA's requirements and help you apply for your enhanced DBS check, plus your PVG Scheme membership through Disclosure Scotland, both required before you can register.
A theory and hazard perception test covering road procedure, traffic signs, driving test disabilities and law, and instructional techniques. Current DVSA fee: £81. We run structured revision sessions to prepare you.
An advanced-standard driving test, assessed to a higher bar than a normal practical test. Current DVSA fee: £111. We provide dedicated Part 2 coaching once your Part 1 is passed.
Once Part 2 is passed, you can apply for a trainee licence to legally start teaching under our supervision and earning while you train for Part 3. Current DVSA fee: £140, valid 6 months.
Assessed on your ability to actually teach a pupil, not just drive. Current DVSA fee: £111. This is where our in-house mentoring makes the biggest difference.
Once you pass Part 3, DVSA registration currently costs £300 (renewed every 4 years alongside a standards check). The moment you're on the register, your place in The Driver Academy franchise is confirmed.
You have 2 years from passing Part 1 to complete Parts 2 and 3, or you'll need to start again from Part 1. We build your timetable to comfortably beat that window.
